Abstract: According to statistics, women with a BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation have a higher risk of developing breast cancer (BC) than the general population: the average cumulative risk among BRCA1 carriers is 65% (range 44-78%), for carriers of mutations in the BRCA2 gene – is 45-49% [1, 2].
The widespread use of X-ray mammography (MG) has indeed significantly improved the detection of breast tumors [3,4]. The purpose of the study was to determine the efficacy of MG in detection of BC in women of various age groups with BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation.
47 women with BC and BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation were involved in the study. The patients were divided into 2 age groups: Group I (n=26) -average age 31.4±2.8 years (27-40 years); Group II (n=21)- average age 53.5±3.2 years (40-62) years. All women were undergoing X-ray mammography. Sensitivity of the method were calculated.
Results showed that in Group I the sensitivity of MG was only 54.5% and was lower in comparison with the results of Group II (86.3%). The analysis of the X-ray density of breast tissue, a predominance of a fibrotic and glandular component (in 55.3 % of all cases) was revealed, especially in the Group I (women <40 years of age)-in 69.2% of cases. Thus, the effectiveness of MG is low in young women (<40 years of age) with a BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation in comparison with the older patients. It might be explained by the predominance of the fibrotic and glandular component in mammary gland tissue, which are more characteristic for reproductive age.
