IRON PILL GASTRITIS – AN UNDERRECOGNISED CAUSE OF GASTRITIS WITH POTENTIALLY SERIOUS OUTCOMES

Introduction

Iron Deficiency Anemia is a global health concern, affecting 66% of the 1.9 billion people suffering from anemia worldwide [1]. With widespread prescription and ingestion of iron tablets, their side effects are widely acknowledged and well-known. Iron Pill Gastritis is a poorly recognized consequence of iron pill ingestion. Awareness of this condition among clinicians is essential for the delivery of timely treatment. We present the case of a 45-year-old male who developed Iron Pill Gastritis following ingestion of iron tablets for Iron Deficiency Anemia. The diagnosis was confirmed through microscopy of gastric biopsies obtained during Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD). Management involved discontinuation of oral iron tablets and switching to a liquid iron supplement, resulting in a resolution of symptoms. This case highlights the importance of recognizing and managing this underreported complication.
