Fundamentals of Care in Post-Surgical Wards: Nurses’ and Patients’ Perceptions

Abstract:

Introduction: Patients’ basic nursing care needs are delineated in fundamentals of care standards; if not met, nursing quality and patient outcomes are significantly and negatively impacted. This two-part, baseline study aimed to determine patients’ and nurses’ perceptions about delivery of fundamentals of care, and to discover challenges that hinder nurses from providing such care.

Method: A descriptive mixed methods design was used in 12 hospitals over a 3-month period. During Stage I, quantitative data was collected from 430 staff nurses and 373 patients in post-surgical units, using a modified version of the self-report All Wales Fundamen-tals of Care Audit Tool. During Stage II, qualitative data was collected in focus group discussions with charge nurses at each hospital, using structured interviews. Analysis: Descriptive statistics were used to analyze (1) patients’ and nurses’ perceptions on the extent of practice compared to the perceived importance of fun-damentals of care delivery, and (2) nurses’ recommenda-tions for improving care to meet standards. The modi-fied Self-Report Questionnaires were effective tools for assessing patients’ and nurses’ perceptions of fundamen-tals of care delivery in 12 post-surgical units in Oman. Focus groups were effective for identifying challenges that hinder nurses from providing fundamentals of care in their units. Discussion: The presentation would focus on the findings of the study that can be used to design policies and training that promote quality nursing care and to streamline resource allocation. Implementing unit-level fundamentals of care assessments could clarify expected standards of nursing care, measure improvements in quality of care, and inform policy decision-making. Fu-ture studies should include fundamentals of care assess-ments in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and in other specialty wards in the Sultanate of Oman.

Biography:

Najeem has completed his Master of Public Health from the University of Southern Mississippi, US through Fulbright scholarship and is currently the sec-tion head of primary healthcare nursing practice at the Ministry of Health in Oman. He has published a number of scientific papers as well as articles in different journals and magazines. He served as a board member at Oman Cancer Association and is an active volunteer in cancer survivors program. He is a certified healthcare leadership trainer. He is an adjunct lecture of community health nursing program at the Higher Institute of Health Spe-cialties in the Oman.
