Abstract
Introduction. The objective was to evaluate the failures of endodontic treatments performed by students in the clinic of the Conservative Odontology – Endodontics department of the Institute of Odontology-Stomatology of the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar during the 2020-2021 academic year.
Methodology. This was a retrospective study conducted using the clinical records of patients treated by Master 1 and Master 2 students in odontology studies between 2020 and 2021. Validation of endodontic treatment was based on the signature of the supervising teacher appearing on the patient’s file, including the clinical examination sheet and the various radiographs. After evaluation of the files, the patients who had consented to participate in the study, were recalled for a clinical and radiographic evaluation of the treated teeth. A number of 38 teeth presenting a complete endodontic treatment or retreatment up to the definitive coronal restoration were selected.
Results. Data analysis showed a failure rate of endodontic treatments of 57.9%. Clinical assessment showed spontaneous pain (5.3%), axial percussion (10.3%). Mobilities (II and III) were observed in 18.4% of treated teeth and lymphadenopathy in 13% of the sample. Radiographically, under- and over-fillings represented 18.4% and 10.5% of cases, respectively. Unfilled canals were 26.3%. Evaluation of the periapical state with CBCT PAI showed indices 2, 3 in 10.5% and 7.9% of cases, respectively.
Conclusion. This study showed a very high failure rate to endodontic treatment, hence the need to strengthen clinical teaching and improve supervision of students
