Adhesive Protocols and Classification of Bonding Systems in Restorative Dentistry

Introduction: Successful outcomes in restorative dentistry are highly dependent on achieving strong adhesion between dental materials and tooth structures. Adhesion involves chemical, physical, and especially micromechanical interactions. This abstract provides an overview of different adhesive systems, their clinical applications, and the importance of following proper bonding protocols.

The effectiveness of adhesive techniques was evaluated through the analysis of etching methods (total etch, selective etch, self-etch), the use of primers and bonding agents, and their roles on enamel and dentin. Acid etching of enamel, introduced by Buonocore in 1955, creates microporosities that enhance bonding agent penetration. Dentin, due to its organic content and smear layer, poses greater adhesive challenges. A strong hybrid layer is key for reliable adhesion. Understanding the structure of enamel and dentin helps to optimize application techniques.

Universal and self-etch systems offer simplified protocols and reduce postoperative sensitivity, increasing clinical success. Properly executed steps result in better resin tag formation and stronger, long-lasting adhesion.
