Background: The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains considerably high worldwide. The cultural practice of shaving at barbershops in India and other countries of South east Asia is widespread. Barbers may be responsible for transmitting infection among the community at large through unsafe practices.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study which was conducted from 2016 to 2019 in coastal Odisha, India. A preformed questionnaire was used to assess barbers regarding their awareness of HBV and HCV, and practice measures adopted during haircut and shaving.

Results: Of the 713 barbers assessed in community barber shops, 87.7% barbers washed their hands with water only before and after every procedure while 95.4% used alum as an antiseptic. Only 2.7% were aware that that hepatitis B is a viral disease. 9.5% of the barbers knew that hepatitis-B could be transmitted by sharing of blades while 2.7% of them had received prior hepatitis B vaccination. 95% of them had not matriculated. None of the barbers used a new apron/towel/comb with each new customer. Barbers working in salons, those aged 25 years and above and those who had studied beyond secondary level had significantly greater awareness regarding various aspects of transmission of hepatitis B and C.

Conclusion: The level of awareness regarding transmission of hepatitis B and C was very low among community barbers. There is a pressing need for institution of mass awareness programme among community barbers for control of hepatitis B while stringent regulatory measures are required to ensure the adoption of safe practices
