Background

Gastrointestinal (GI) problems such as constipation, reflux, and food selectivity are highly prevalent in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These symptoms often coexist with oral-motor, sensory, and behavioral challenges, intensifying feeding difficulties and negatively affecting communication and social participation. The study aims to highlight a multidisciplinary clinical framework integrating gastroenterology, speech–language pathology, and psychology to address these interconnected domains.

Methods

A 12-week clinical program was implemented for 20 children aged 2–8 years with ASD and co-occurring GI complaints. Assessment tools included the Beckman Oral Motor Skills Checklist, the Sensory Profile, and parent observation sheets. Interventions combined medical evaluation, sensory-based feeding therapy, oral-motor exercises, and caregiver training.

Results

Seventy-five percent of participants demonstrated improved food acceptance and oral tolerance. Constipation-related discomfort decreased in 60% of cases. Parents reported enhanced mealtime interactions and reduced behavioral distress. Collaborative monitoring between gastroenterologists and therapists improved treatment adherence and family satisfaction.

Conclusion

Multidisciplinary management effectively reduces feeding-related GI symptoms in children with ASD, facilitating better oral-motor control, behavioral regulation, and overall developmental progress. The integration of gastroenterological evaluation within speech–feeding therapy practices strengthens early intervention and holistic care outcomes.
